Gilles de Montmorency-Laval was Earl of Brienne and Baron of Rais. He left a gruesome memory in history. Indeed, he was convicted in 1440 for many crimes and hanged for sodomy, murder and witchcraft. His kinship with the royal family of France made him a noble of high rank, and therefore untouchable, especially given that he was a hero of the Hundred Years War.
