KUARUP, JOY FROM THE SUN GOD
From the insiders' point of view
An episode from the series NATIVE VISIONS
For the first time ever, the Yawalapiti, one of the most fascinating tribes of the Amazon in Brazil, have been given cameras. Under the guidance of their chief, Aritana, they went to great lengths to record their own images and safeguard their culture and language, now only spoken by a handful of elders.
This ground-breaking film records the central ceremony of their culture, the Kuarup, a funeral ritual which goes on for a year after the death of an important member of the community. Until now, no pictures of that ceremony have ever filtered out.
